Gamma - Ray Telescopes 400 Years of Astronomical Telescopes
نویسنده
چکیده
The last half-century has seen dramatic developments in γ−ray telescopes, from their initial conception and development through to their blossoming into full maturity as a potent research tool in astronomy. Gamma-ray telescopes are leading research in diverse areas such as γ−ray bursts, blazars, Galactic transients, and the Galactic distribution of Al.

Observing signatures of Cosmic Rays using high-energy gamma-ray telescopes
Detecting gamma-rays from discrete astronomical objects offers the potential to directly study sites of cosmic particle acceleration. Alternatively, the pervasive diffuse gamma-ray emission component caused by interactions of cosmic rays with interstellar gas and radiation fields carries information about the spatial distribution of cosmic particle accelerators and reveals details about the cha...
متن کاملOptimization of graded multilayer designs for astronomical X-ray telescopes.
We developed a systematic method for optimizing the design of depth-graded multilayers for astronomical hard-x-ray and soft-gamma-ray telescopes based on the instrument's bandpass and the field of view. We apply these methods to the design of the conical-approximation Wolter I optics employed by the balloon-borne High Energy Focusing Telescope, using W/Si as the multilayer materials. In additio...
متن کاملDevelopment of thermally formed glass optics for astronomical hard X-ray telescopes.
The next major observational advance in hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray astrophysics will come with the implementation of telescopes capable of focusing 10-200 keV radiation. Focusing allows high signal-to-noise imaging and spectroscopic observations of many sources in this band for the first time. The recent development of depth-graded multilayer coatings has made the design of telescopes for this b...
متن کاملThe Absence of X-ray Flashes from Nearby Galaxies and the Gamma-Ray Burst Distance Scale
If typical gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have X-ray counterparts similar to those detected by Ginga, then sensitive focusing X-ray telescopes will be able to detect GRBs three orders of magnitude fainter than the detection limit of the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE). If a substantial portion of the burst population detected by BATSE originates in a Galactic halo at distances greater th...
متن کاملThe Magic Telescope and the Observation of Gamma Ray
— The MAGIC Telescope, now taking data with an energy threshold well below 100 GeV, will soon be able to take full advantage of the fast slewing capability of its altazimuthal mount. Exploiting the link with the GCN network, the MAGIC Telescope could be one of the first ground-based experiments able to see the prompt emission of Gamma Ray Bursts in the few tens of GeV region. PACS 95.55.Ka – X-...
